A large number of tea garden workers under the banner of Assam Adivasi Students' Association of Dhekiajuli LAC in Sonitpur district staged massive protests recently against the government for failure to hike daily wages. According to sources, tea garden workers' unions had persisted with their demand of hike in daily wages to Rs.350 and appealed to the authority concerned several times but their demands fell into deaf ears. Tea garden workers voiced their resentment by shouting slogans against the government and ministers. Under the directives of the central committee, protest to demand hike in daily wage was carried out in various places across the State and Melkhach Toppo, vice-president of AASA central committee and Anonda Tanti, regional president of AASA, Dhekiajuli chapter, were present during the protests. Melkhach Toppo said, "It is unfortunate that the government is completely ignoring our constant demand for hiking daily wages. The present wages of the tea garden workers hardly meets their expenditure. We expect the government to settle this issue soon."
