In 2018, 200 workers were not issued certificates that denied them compensation that they are entitled to. For the past six months, 22-year-old Chithra, her husband and one-yearold son have been living under a neem tree in the nondescript village of Arapakkam in Kancheepuram. When officials rescued the family of bonded labourers from a brick kiln in Nellur village, it seemed that the impossible dream of freedom had come true for Chithra, but the gruelling hours at work have now been replaced by an exhausting wait. Struggling to make ends meet, a decent life in mainstream society appears elusive.
