Tea estate workers threaten to boycott WB polls

Tea estate workers of North Bengal, especially in Darjeeling Terai and Dooars region threatened to boycott the upcoming state elections. Recently, the state government made a committee to settle the wages and during this time, declared interim wages of Rs. 33 which will be inactive after 31st March 2017. According to the joint forum, more than 300 tea garden workers have died within years due to malnutrition problems and lack of treatment. Tea factories in the region have remained closed for a long time due to a variety of problems, both administrative and financial, which include lack of investment, increasing costs and dropping prices.
