Despite ban, manual scavenging continues

Though, the Supreme Court has expressed serious concern over people dying during manual scavenging and sewage cleaning in the country, the practice of manual scavenging is prevalent in the city. The sewer men are being forced to enter manholes in the absence of mechanised desilting of sewer lines. On September 4, Amarjit Singh, a contractual manual scavenger of the Municipal Corporation, had a narrow escape when he inhaled dangerous gas emanating from a choked sewerage in Khazana Gate area. Defying the Supreme Court orders, the operation and maintenance (O&M) cell, officials of the MC forced sewer men to enter manhole without providing any safety kits.
