The entry and eventual domination of garment retailing by big-box or mega retailers like Wal- Mart, TESCO and Carrefour had a dramatic effect on the global garment manufacturing industry. Earlier, most garment units were medium scale, localized businesses, which manufactured their exclusive designs and labels, and supplied mostly to domestic and a few foreign buyers. The study examines how purchasing practices of retailers catering to the requirements of giant retailers affect the labour conditions in export-oriented garment industry. It focused on the purchasing practices of Wal-Mart, TESCO, and Carrefour in Delhi, Bengaluru and Tirupur. This study is a part of the global study on the purchasing practices of giant retailers and their impact on labour and working conditions.
