In collaboration with Citizens’ Collective for Humanitarian Relief (CCHR), Centre for Education and Communication (CEC) organized relief work in different parts of Delhi-NCR throughout the Covid period.
A Workers' Dhaba (Mazdoor Dhaba) was initiated on 28 March, 2020, in the North Campus of Delhi University, followed by two others in Subhash Camp (21 April) and in Wazirpur Industrial Area (30 April). Workers' Dhaba distributed food - both cooked meals and dry rations - to working-class families and stranded workers in various areas of Delhi-NCR. A network of community kitchens in different working-class neighbourhoods of North Delhi were also initiated.
These kitchens were built together with the workers and their families, directly in the neighbourhoods where food was delivered. To respond to different needs, dry ration kits were also prepared and distributed in various areas in the city.
During the first lock-down, between March-May 2020, the Workers' Dhaba prepared and distributed 88,960 food packets in different working-class neighbourhoods of North Delhi. In addition, the Workers' Dhaba also distributed about 18,000 meals, contributed by partner organisations. With three Dhabas, the initiative reached between 2,600 to 2,900 people daily.
Over 1,150 dry ration kits were also distributed, in areas where cooked food cound't be provided. These kits were distributed to families and sets of individuals that were largely left outside of the State’s Public Distribution System, particularly in the first weeks of the lockdown.
