Centre for Labouring People (CLP)

Strengthening Skills and Opportunities for Informal Workers

The Centre for Labouring People (CLP) is a community centre under the Centre for Education and Communication (CEC) that provides essential support to informal workers and urban poor. Informal workers and urban poor communities often face challenges such as limited access to information, training, and resources that could help them improve their livelihoods. CLP addresses these needs by offering services that focus on building knowledge, enhancing skills, and increasing awareness of available opportunities.

Core Activities at CLP

Access to Information and Resources: CLP acts as a central point where informal workers can access information on available government schemes, workplace regulations, and social services. By offering this information, CLP helps workers better understand their options and how to access support.

Educational Access through a Community Library: CLP’s library is a welcoming space open to readers of all ages. By offering books and resources that cover a wide array of topics, the library fosters a culture of learning and growth.

Skills and Literacy Training: The centre provides training programs in financial literacy, digital skills, and life skills, designed to help informal workers manage their work and personal finances more effectively. These workshops aim to improve workers' abilities to navigate their work environments and strengthen their skill sets.

Awareness Building: CLP conducts regular sessions on topics such as workplace safety, health, and available social services. These sessions provide informal workers with the necessary information to make informed decisions about their work and well-being.

Support for Women Workers: CLP offers specific programs for women in informal sectors, including sessions on health, financial management, and skills development. These programs create an environment where women can enhance their knowledge and build confidence.

Youth Engagement and Community Participation: CLP engages youth by combining creative expression with community involvement. Alongside cultural activities like drawing and singing, young people are encouraged to participate in initiatives that address local concerns such as cleanliness drives, environmental awareness, and health campaigns. Through art workshops, storytelling, and discussions, children can explore issues affecting their neighbourhood while developing a sense of responsibility and civic duty. These activities nurture their creativity, build confidence, and foster leadership skills, empowering them to contribute to the well-being of their community.

Cultural and Community Activities: CLP organises cultural and community events such as street plays and celebrations of Independence Day and Women's Day. These activities serve as a way to bring workers together, providing opportunities for engagement and social interaction.

Focus on Capacity Building: CLP’s primary focus is to support informal workers by providing them with the tools, information, and training needed to improve their livelihoods. Through its various activities, the centre aims to create an environment where workers can enhance their skills, access resources, and strengthen their ability to navigate challenges in their daily lives.

By delivering these programs, CLP plays a key role in supporting informal workers and fostering a more informed and skilled community.
