The one to eighteen-rupee increase in daily wages granted to rural job scheme workers flies in the face of economist Jean Dreze's suggestion to the Centre that the workers be paid enough to allow "dignified living". Dreze, member of an expert committee appointed to suggest how wages should be revised under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, had in a dissenting note rejected the current practice of basing wage hikes on inflation rates.
