Till a few days ago, the employees of the English Indian Clays Limited (EICL) at Kochuveli were among the secure and satisfactory groups of workers in the district. They used to get salary on the first working day of every month and August used to be the month when Onam bonus of Rs.45,000 was credited in their account without fail. But, the employees were shocked to receive a notice at their houses by mid-August. It was a mandatory legal notice informing them that the company may close down permanently on September 15.
