About the Project – India produces roughly 250 billion clay bricks, employs 20 million workers toiling for 14 hours a day. Women remain invisible and are not recognized as workers. Men, women and children face gross inequality, injustice and bondage. “Empowering CSOs on Decent Work and Green Brick in India’s Brick Kilns” is working with diverse stakeholders and bringing them together to improve labour conditions, enhance equality and ensure sustainable growth. The stakeholders are CSOs working on human, labour, women and child rights and green technology – and also brick kiln workers, owners and local authorities. 42 CSOs have trained on advocating for inclusive decent work, cleaner brick kiln technologies. 5000 targeted workers have been organized into collectives. 50 CSOs have acute awareness around project issues. 10 owners have converted to green Natural Draft Zig Zag Technology (NDZZT). Workers Skill Diversification Centres have been established in Uttar Pradesh and Tripura to break down the structural divide and to encourage more women to learn new skills. Tripura State Government have appreciated the training module developed and have adopted it in State’s Skill Development Curriculum.
